Abi Lee: Beyond, Below, and Above
Wednesday, October 8, 2025 @ 7:30 pm
Doors open at 7:00 pm

Naarm/Melbourne based pianist Abi Lee’s Beyond, Below, and Above is a project with the core idea; “sound is primacy over the pre-written material.” Using the traditional aspects of compositions as a springboard for improvisation, the ensemble explores possibilities in keeping the core part of the pre-written materials whilst having full freedom in creativity and individuality. Lee’s originals combine materials from traditional jazz-influenced compositions with musical games, conduction, words, and prompts for ensemble improvisation with influences of Anthony Braxton, Kris Davis, Alister Spence, and Ran Blake. Focusing on the sound and its movement within Lee’s compositions, the ensemble attempts to answer the question, “How much does a pre-written material limit and/or expand creativity?”

About Abi Lee
Abi Lee is a pianist, composer, and improviser based in Naarm/Melbourne whose work encompasses jazz and free improvisation. With her carefree and bold musical spirit, Abi demonstrates beauty in pre-determined and spontaneous improvisation. Her compositions explore the contrast between dense harmonies and abstract melodies, completed with each musician’s unique voice. Abi tells intimate and truthful stories through piano, using the full range instrument offers. “I’m struck by her adventurous spirit, and fertile musical mind. There’s a wonderful sense of searching, courage, and a deep commitment and dedication to improvisation…” (Andrea Keller) “Abi’s playing demonstrates the musical depth and vulnerability necessary to be engaged in high level ’real time’ improvisation…” (Stephen Magnusson)
