Doors open at 7:00 pm
Panorama Brasil explore the music of two Brazilian jazz giants – Hermeto Pascoal and Airto Moreira – led by guest musical director, Yael Zamir (flute).
From their early days together in Sambrasa Trio and the legendary Quarteto Novo, Hermeto Pascoal and Airto Moreira have been at the forefront of Brazilian jazz and improvised music. Panorama Brasil explore and re-imagine the repertoire of these two Brazilian greats, diving into interpretations of regional and folkloric rhythms, as well as samba, bossa nova, and Brazilian jazz.
Formed by drummer Alastair Kerr in 2012, over the past decade Panorama Brasil have performed at many major festivals, including the Melbourne International Jazz Festival (with Orchestra Victoria), Stonnington Jazz (with Doug de Vries), and Adelaide Cabaret Festival (with Vince Jones and Alda Rezende). They have presented many major concerts dedicated to the works of great Brazilian artists, including: Jobim (MIJF and Adelaide Cabaret Festival); Baden Powell’s Os Afro Sambas (touring with Alda Rezende); Clube da Esquina (Melbourne Recital Centre); and Brazil’s Modern Poets (music from Brazil’s leading songwriters post-1970).

The Music of Egberto Gismonti
This program presents music from throughout Gismonti’s extensive discography, though gives voice to a lesser-known side of his music, with most pieces being drawn from his first three albums O Sonho (1969), Sonho ’70 (1970), and Orfeo Novo (1970). These albums pre- date the ECM recordings and consequent “ECM-style” he has become known for. On his ECM recordings Gismonti primarily plays extended-range guitars of 8, 10, or 14 strings, and many pieces are long and episodic in form. His early recordings, however, feature original MPB-style orchestrated songs, short-form compositions for 6-string guitar and other instruments, as well as more exploratory, avant-garde works. This program features early works for guitar in a solo and chamber context, his early MPB-style songs arranged for chamber ensemble, and some later works which have become Gismonti favourites. This program celebrates Gismonti as one of Brazil’s most unique and exciting musicians of our time.
