CALLUM G'FROERER QUINTET – Debut
Sunday, January 19, 2025 @ 7:30 pm
Doors open at 7:00 pm
Callum G’Froerer is a Narrm/Melbourne-based trumpet player active across many genres including jazz, electro-acoustic composition, and long-duration installation works. His quartet, featuring Joe O’Connor (piano), Sam Anning (bass), and James McLean (drumkit), debuted at MJC in late 2023 and will be expanded into a quintet with special guest Flora Carbo (alto saxophone) to launch G’Froerer’s latest album. This highly interactive quintet experiments with space, moving between long-form meditative episodes to intricate harmonically forms for group improvisation. G’Froerer has been a member of the Bennetts Lane Big Band, Blowfish, Mace Francis Orchestra, Johannes Luebbers Dectet, Australian Art Orchestra, and Jeremy Rose's Earshift Orchestra. He has also released two albums as a leader: 2013’s City Speaks (recorded by Mal Stanley for ABC Jazztrack) and 2015’s Space Available. He was nominated for the 2013 Jazz Bell Awards and long-listed for the 2014 Freedman Jazz Fellowship. He is a member of the Phonetic Orchestra, which won the 2021 Art Music Award for Performance of the Year (Jazz/Improvised Music). He has performed widely across Australia and at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival, and internationally (Dizzy’s at the Lincoln Center, Monterey Jazz Festival, B-Flat Berlin).
