Presented by the Melbourne Jazz Co-operative, with funding assistance from Creative Australia and Music Australia

Carl Dewhurst has spent years honing his craft as a creative musician and is widely regarded as one of Australia’s leading jazz and improvising guitarists. He currently co- leads Showa 44 with drummer Simon Barker and has previously co-led ensembles such as The Drip Hards and NUDE. His current trio features bassist and composer Cameron Undy, alongside drummer Alex Inman-Hislop.

Dewhurst has recorded over a dozen albums of his own work and as a collaborator with a diverse range of renowned artists including Bae Il Dong, Kim Dong-Won, Susan Gai Dowling, Sandy Evans, Stu Hunter, Riley Lee, Scott McConnachie, Bernie McGann, Matt McMahon, Jade MacRae, Lisa Parrott, Mary Rapp, Phil Slater, and Scott Tinkler. A former, long-time member of the Australian Art Orchestra, he has also lived and performed in London, New York, and Amsterdam. Currently, he is an Associate Lecturer at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

Dewhurst’s latest album, Avicennia, features his trio with special guest, New York-based saxophonist Lisa Parrott. Inspired by wanderings through the streets, open spaces, and swampy tidal waterways of Sydney’s inner west, the album blends elements of jazz, roots, improvisation, and polyrhythm.

“In this age of convergent politics and convergent art it’s refreshing to know anarchy still has a champion…he is such a pure, intuitive improviser.” – John Shand, The Sydney Morning Herald
