James O’Brien Quintet

Pianist James O’Brien is regarded as one of Australia’s most exciting rising jazz talents. James’ sound is inventive and forward-thinking, yet remains deeply connected to the rich traditions of jazz. A graduate of the prestigious Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), he has shared the stage with a range of notable artists, including Kate Ceberano, Dick Oatts, Remy Le Boeuf, Jamie Oehlers, Mat Jodrell, Sam Anning, and Gian Slater.

Throughout his career, James has performed with celebrated ensembles such as the Australian National Jazz Orchestra Youth Big Band, Horizon Art Orchestra, Perth Cabaret Collective, and the WA Jazz Project, to name just a few. He is a frequent performer at festivals and events across the country, with appearances at the Sydney Conservatorium Jazz Festival and the Perth International Jazz Festival, among others.

For one night only, James and his dynamic quintet will present an unforgettable evening of modern jazz. This special performance will include the launch of his highly anticipated ‘Toward Dawn’ suite, recorded earlier this year. Inspired by his relocation to Melbourne, ‘Toward Dawn’ explores the universal human experience of movement and transition through significant life-events — how we grapple with change, face our fears, work through challenges, and ultimately find our place in the world.

Each movement reflects a stage of this transition, painting a picture of growth, resilience, and self-discovery. The suite is both a personal reflection and a universal exploration of the challenges and rewards of embracing change.
