Julien Wilson and the “Stevies” – guitarist Stephen Magnusson, and accordionist Steve Grant – have worked together as the Julien Wilson Trio for almost 20 years, releasing two albums, and touring nationally and internationally (including Europe, South Korea and Indonesia). Their first album, Trio-Live (2007) was recorded as part of The ABC Jazztrack 30th Anniversary Concert. Their second album, Swailing saw them expanding their sound with the addition of electric guitar, moog guitar, bass clarinet and soprano sax, and recording both some “non-originals” along with new material. While the instrumentation of the group often invites “French” connotations, the band are all heavily influenced by Brazilian & Argentinean music forms. The trio has also expanded their repertoire to include material by Ellington, Ornette, Fats Waller, Hermeto Pascoal, and even Jules Massenet.
“Ravishingly beautiful music. Enchanting lyricism. The epitome of understatement.” – Jessica Nicholas, The Age
