Callum G’Froerer is a trumpet player and composer who is active between many musical genres – improvisation, jazz, commissioning new contemporary repertoire, and electro-acoustic composition. In the jazz realm, he has performed widely across Australia and at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival, and internationally (Dizzy’s at the Lincoln Center, Monterey Jazz Festival, B-Flat Berlin).

G’Froerer was nominated for the 2013 Jazz Bell Awards and long-listed for the 2014 Freedman Jazz Fellowship. He has been a member of the Bennetts Lane Big Band, Mace Francis Orchestra, Johannes Luebbers Dectet, Jeremy Rose’s Earshift Orchestra, and the Ed Partyka Jazz Orchestra, and is a current member of the Phonetic Orchestra, which won the 2021 Art Music Award for Performance of the Year (Jazz/Improvised Music).

He has released two albums as a leader: 2013’s City Speaks (recorded by Mal Stanley for ABC Jazztrack) and 2015’s Space Available, before being based in Berlin from 2015-2018.

For this new quartet project, G’Froerer is joined by Joe O’Connor on piano, Sam Anning on bass, and James McLean on drums and cymbals. They will perform new pieces for the ensemble’s upcoming recording that flow between detailed harmonic and rhythmic structures and spacious collective textures, as well as music from ‘Space Available’.
