His was a musical family, his father’s love of jazz enabled Sean to hear the music of Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea and others as a young child. To this day Sean is still entranced by Debussy and Messiaen.

Peter Koopman Trio

Sam Anning – bass
Ben Vanderwal – drums

For the past decade, guitarist, composer and New Zealander Peter Koopman has called Sydney home. Drawing inspiration from Australia’s rich and diverse music scene, he has developed a unique voice on the guitar, and in 2022 was awarded first place at the prestigious National Jazz Awards held at the Wangaratta Jazz festival. He is also sought-after as a sideman, having performed around Australia and internationally with artists such as Vince Jones, Katie Noonan, Aloe Blacc, Donny Benét and Matt McMahon among others.

Earlier last year he released his debut album “Now Where”, a collection of original tunes recorded live at Golden Retriever studios in Sydney with Tim Firth on drums, Lachlan Hamilton on tenor sax and Jacques Emery on double bass. Rounding out this interstate band will be Perth drummer Ben Vanderwal and bassist Sam Anning. Together they will present a program of Koopman’s originals from his new album, as well as some newer originals and a standard or two.
