The Poetry of Grief is an original performance where music, poetry and research meet. With this series of poems crafted from interviews with bereaved older adults, we will take you on a journey of grief – through the ups and downs. We will focus not only on the sadness but also on the resilience, strength and courage that can come from a significant loss. Together we will feel, experience and learn about love and loss and challenge the notion that grief has an expiry date.

Grief does not discriminate – it affects people of all ages. Yet, the needs of bereaved older adults are often neglected and their voices are left unheard. This poetry reading and musical performance seeks to give them a voice. Using innovative arts-based methods, we will present a series of emotional poems that were carefully created from interview transcripts of bereaved older people. This performance will draw attention to their bereavement experiences and support needs, while also illustrating the power of research poetry and music as creative methods to engage and inspire diverse audiences.

By witnessing the different shapes of grief, this performance aims to educate, challenge, encourage and provoke reflection on ageing and loss – inviting the audience to pause and look at grieving older people in a new way.
