SUMMARY:ABC Jazz Live: Eugene Ball's 'Continuum' + Hyperbaroq– Melbourne International Jazz Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating 50 years of Jazztrack \nMulti-award-winning trumpeter\, composer and arranger Eugene Ball premieres his new composition\, Continuum — a personal musical reflection on the enduring influence of Jazztrack\, Australia’s longest running national jazz radio program. Across a career spanning more than three decades\, Ball has performed\, recorded and collaborated with some of the most revered artists in Australia and internationally. He is celebrated for his musical breadth and distinctive voice — characterised by a wide-ranging timbral palette\, a refined sense of space\, emotional depth\, and an undercurrent of wit and humour. \nClosing the afternoon is Hyperbaroq\, the collaboration between Mirko Guerrini\, Ilaria Crociani and Stephen Magnusson. The virtuosic trio brings its own distinctive perspective to Baroque music\, utilising looping\, sampling and electronic textures to create work that is “as powerful now as it was four centuries ago” (The Age).

SUMMARY:Ross McHenry: Folk Music feat. Adam O'Farrill– Melbourne International Jazz Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:Led by Australian bassist Ross McHenry and featuring New York trumpeter Adam O’Farrill\, this bold new collaboration unites two of the most inventive musical voices working today. Celebrated as both forward-thinking composers and formidable improvisers\, McHenry and O’Farrill share a restless creative curiosity\, drawing on jazz\, chamber music and experimental traditions to create music that is at once structured and spontaneous. \nMcHenry’s music has been praised by The Australian for its “brilliance and overpowering musicality” while O’Farrill’s work as both a bandleader and collaborator with artists including Vijay Iyer\, Mary Halvorson\, Tyshawn Sorey and\nHiromi has earned widespread acclaim. The New York Times has described him as “among the leading trumpet players in jazz – and perhaps the music’s next major improviser” a sentiment that has been echoed in Downbeat’s latest poll\, where O’Farrill was recognised as Rising Star Artist\, Trumpeter and Arranger of the Year. \nMcHenry and O’Farrill are joined by drummer Kyrie Anderson\, a founding member of the acclaimed quartet Aura; guitarist Django Rowe\, one of Australia’s most compelling improvisers; and Julius Schwing\, the Bruny Island-based guitarist and composer whose work has been described as “radiant and airy\, gnarled and knotty\,\nmeditative and hypnotic” \nTogether\, these five artists create music that is adventurous\, conversational and\nalive with possibility.

SUMMARY:Bokani Dyer Trio: Traditions– Melbourne International Jazz Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:Bokani Dyer Trio is a high-voltage force in modern Afro-jazz\, led by visionary pianist and composer Bokani Dyer. Since his early career mentorship with celebrated pianist Jason Moran\, Dyer’s career has catapulted him across the globe — releasing six solo albums and performing on the world’s biggest jazz stages\, including North Sea Jazz\, London Jazz Festival and SFJAZZ in San Fransisco. \nBorn from Botswana’s soul and sharpened on South Africa’s jazz scene\, his trio — featuring Dyer on piano alongside Timothy Norton (bass) and Lumanyano Mzi (drums) — delivers a sound charged with swinging post-bop\, hypnotic groove and raw harmonic electricity. \nFor their Melbourne International Jazz Festival debut\, the trio presents music from their forthcoming album\, Traditions\, offering a rare opportunity to experience this new body of work live before its release. Much of the material remains fresh to the stage\, making each performance part of the music’s ongoing evolution\, reflecting\nBokani Dyer Trio’s continued exploration of heritage\, memory and identity.

SUMMARY:Soojin Suh Coloris Trio– Melbourne International Jazz Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:Known for her inventive approach to rhythm and improvisation\, Soojin Suh has developed a singular musical language that draws from both contemporary jazz and Korean artistic traditions. Alongside her acclaimed work as a bandleader\, Suh is a highly sought-after drummer and collaborator\, playing a central role in Sungjae Son’s Near East Quartet and their self-titled ECM release. \nWith pianist Jaehun Kang and bassist Hoo King\, Soojin Suh’s Coloris Trio draws on the concept of “melodic breath”\, a key principle in Korean traditional music. Their detailed arrangements and improvisations emerge from the pulse of the melody\, making way for striking moments and musical textures that come from a uniquely Korean aesthetic. \nPresented in partnership with Korea’s renowned Jarasum Jazz Festival\, these two special performances at The JazzLab showcase one of the most compelling ensembles in Korean jazz today. This project has received grant funding from the Australia-Korea Foundation of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

SUMMARY:Tomeka Reid Quartet Ft. Mary Halvorson (USA)– Melbourne International Jazz Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:Tomeka Reid stands as one of the most boldly imaginative voices in contemporary music — a fiercely creative cellist\, composer\, and bandleader whose work blends Western classical tradition\, modes rooted in the African diaspora\, and the avant‑garde. A defining force in Chicago’s improvised‑music community\, her boundary‑pushing artistry and sonic originality have earned major recognition\, including a 2022 Herb Alpert Award and a MacArthur Fellowship. \nFor this special residency at The JazzLab\, Reid reunites her celebrated quartet: Mary Halvorson — touted by NPR as “the most forward thinking guitarist working right now” — alongside her dynamic rhythm section of bassist Jason Roebke and drummer Tomas Fujiwara. Together\, the quartet takes the stage to perform their acclaimed 2026 release Dance! Skip! Hop! — a joyful\, rhythm‑bending\, harmonically rich album praised by The Guardian as “an early contender for jazz album of the year.” \nAudiences can expect four musicians at the top of their game\, sharing a near‑telepathic interplay shaped by years of collaboration\, in a display of fearless improvisation and a continual push into new musical territory. Renowned jazz critic Nate Chinen declared 2026 as “the year of Tomeka Reid” — the time to witness this extraordinary quartet is right now.
