SUMMARY:The JazzLab Jams - Hosted by The Hue Blanes Trio
DESCRIPTION:A night to celebrate improvisation and spontaneity. \nThe Hue Blanes Trio hosts an evening where anything is possible\, and where everyone is invited to create musical magic on Melbourne’s most hallowed podium. \nAbout Hue Blanes: \nHue Blanes is no stranger to Australian ears. The musical savant has graced Melbourne’s jazz clubs for more than two decades\, appearing in various trios and duos\, curating his own shows\, and as a founding member of electro hip-hop outfit The Melodics. In 2017\, Blanes won the prestigious PBS Young Elder of Jazz award and received multiple Green Room nominations for his MIJF comedy show Hue Blanes and the Moon. The past seven years have seen him based in the Netherlands; however\, Hue is now back in Melbourne to wow audiences and once again call the four-seasons city home. \nHue grew up in the small Victorian town of Healesville\, where he began his musical life playing local fêtes\, concerts and festivals. He received a scholarship to study at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School (VCASS) and graduated from Monash University with a Bachelor of Music Performance\, receiving the prestigious Billy Hyde Music Prize for outstanding achievement. \nHis teachers have included some of Australia’s finest musicians — Bob and Steven Sedergreen\, Andrea Keller\, Tim Stevens and Tony Gould — and more recently Fred Hersch\, Eldar Djangirov\, Aaron Goldberg and Jason Moran. Vocally\, Hue has learned from Oliver Mann (Opera Australia)\, Mark Murphy (USA)\, and his teacher of 15 years\, the late Ukrainian soprano Mira Khmelnytskaya. \nHue Blanes is truly “out of the box”. He has been involved in a myriad of genres and musical projects\, all with the ultimate purpose of deepening his playing and understanding of music. \nAn extraordinary live artist\, Hue has performed at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival\, Melbourne Recital Centre\, Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. He is also the winner of the 2018 Lucerne School of Music (Switzerland) International Jazz Piano Competition. \nToday\, Hue is joined by his trio:\nBenjamin Hanlon – double bass\nAaron McCoullough – drums \nBoth are exceptional innovators and craftsmen. \nAn avid gardener\, Hue will curate a set at 7:30pm to open the night\, setting the tone and theme for the evening — often reflecting the day’s events\, the seasons\, and even the astrological position of the Earth in relation to the universe. Music connects us all. \nThe jam session follows at approximately 8:30pm and runs until 10:00pm. \nBring your instruments and your energy. \nThe Hue Blanes Trio performs at Jazzlab Brunswick on the first Tuesday of every month and plans to record two trio albums in the coming year.

SUMMARY:The Radiohead Project
DESCRIPTION:English rock band Radiohead rose to fame in the ‘90s and became one of the most exciting and experimental outfits of their generation. Now a new era of musicians is turning to the group’s iconic back catalogue and finding ways to reinvent the music as their own. \nLed by jazz vocalist Amelia Evans\, Melbourne ensemble The Radiohead Project transforms the music for jazz quartet. Inspired by Radiohead’s radically deconstructed approach to composition and performance\, the band explores Radiohead’s affinity for jazz\, performing works from well-known records such as OK Computer\, Kid A and Amnesiac. For fans\, this promises to be a dreamy\, intimate take on imaginative works you have long admired. \nRecognized for her breathtaking vocal versatility and ability to capture an audience with her authenticity and honesty\, jazz vocalist Amelia Evans is one of Melbourne’s rising stars. She’s performed with the likes of Terri-Lyne Carrington\, James Morrison and Linda Oh\, collaborated with pianist Bob Sedergreen on her debut album The First Song\, and won a score of awards including the 2017 Generations In Jazz Vocal Scholarship. In recent years\, Amelia has firmly established herself as a versatile vocalist and bandleader in the Melbourne jazz scene\, performing with several ensembles at iconic venues and festivals such as the Melbourne Recital Centre\, Hamer Hall\, the Melbourne Women’s International Jazz Festival\, the Castlemaine Jazz Festival and the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz & Blues. \nThe Radiohead Project is a chance to see the young artist in collaboration with her exceptional band. The Radiohead Project is Amelia Evans (vocals)\, Russell Tay (piano)\, Blakely McLean Davies (double bass) and Alex Spicer (drums).

SUMMARY:Margot Petrie Feat. Hue Blanes Trio
DESCRIPTION:Margot Petrie moves between worlds — born in Paris\, now rooted in Melbourne — and her music carries that same restless\, in-between quality. A vocalist\, multi-instrumentalist and performer\, she’s taken her sound across three continents\, from Melbourne’s intimate clubs to stages across Seoul\, Tokyo\, Berlin and Paris. Wherever she plays\, she doesn’t perform so much as pull the room in. \nCreating music for the after hours\, she blends confessional songwriting with modern hip-hop\, dark electronica and alternative pop influences\, her sound is driven by nocturnal beauty. \nMargot is currently in the studio recording — her debut release is nearly yours. \nMargot Petrie will perform with the Hue Blanes Trio for her JazzLab debut\, Saturday 5th September.

SUMMARY:ANNWEN ROBERTS QUINTET
DESCRIPTION:Annwen Roberts is a young improvising violinist from Lutruwita/Tasmania whose musical roots are in jazz and folk\, utilising the timbral and textural qualities of the instrument used in folk and gypsy jazz to create a new lead voice. Studying at the V.C.A. over the last four years\, she has combined these influences to create a whirlwind of lyrical and intense improvised music. Her new quintet leans more into melodies and forms derived from Irish folk music\, combined with interlocking improvisation and jazz harmony. \nShe will perform new music from her upcoming release with the band comprised of Alex Siderov (drums) Tristan Meffre (tenor sax)\, Nick Gregory (guitar). and Claire Aboguelis (bass). This will be the last performance of this music before recording her next release\, which is an EP about Annwen’s cat Moocow\, who went missing and was recovered. The quintet will also play newer music\, and tunes from Roberts’ first release\, Sky Omens. \n“Roberts’ distinctive compositions create ample space for each contributor to shine through the intricately\nlayered clouds\, both as accompanists and soloists.” – Helen Svoboda \n  \nPresented by The Melbourne Jazz Co-operative: \nThe Melbourne Jazz Co-operative is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting and promoting original live jazz performance by established and emerging artists in Melbourne. \nSince 1983 our objectives have been to increase the exposure of contemporary jazz performance by making it accessible to audiences\, and to provide award waged performance opportunities for emerging and established artists. \nIn addition to support derived from member contributions\, the MJC is assisted by  the Victorian Government\, through Creative Victoria\, via its Arts Development Programs. MJC was assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council\, its arts funding and advisory body from 1983-2017 inclusive\, and was delighted to receive Australia Council funding of $60\,000 for our 2019 program. \nThe MJC received $40\,000 from the Australia Council over the 2021/2022 Financial Year\, and was pleased to received a grant of $75\,341 from Creative Australia (with Music Australia contribution) for our 2025 Annual Program. \nOur sold-out 40th Anniversary Concert at the Melbourne Recital Centre in May 2023 was supported by a $20\,000 grant from Creative Victoria’s Creative Projects program.

SUMMARY:Spirograph Studies x Garden Seat 7” Vinyl Launch
DESCRIPTION:In the last few years\, Spirograph Studies have been busy developing new material\, and in late 2025 they released their third album\, Melody Driver. Garden Seat Records\, eclectic Castlemaine-based indie label\, have partnered with Spirograph Studies to produce a very limited edition record\, featuring tracks from Melody Driver on a slick 7” album\, available only at this performance. \nCinematic and dream-like\, Spirograph Studies sculpt live soundtracks\, creating different moods and soundscapes. They use a wide range of musical influences and minimalism to create their genre-bending sound\, described as “post-rock\, post-jazz”\, under the musical leadership of Tamara Murphy. Their music is described as “gorgeous soundscapes…It is not often listeners are invited into something so intricate yet still so accessible” (Hayden Pyke\, WritingInCapitalLetters\, 2019). Their albums have been shortlisted for Music Victoria awards\, featured on The Best Jazz on Bandcamp list\, Album of the Week on ABC Jazz and PBS Radio. Their full catalogue is available through their Bandcamp page. https://spirographstudies.bandcamp.com/ \nSpirograph Studies:\nFran Swinn – guitar\nJames McLean – drums\nLuke Howard – piano\nTamara Murphy – bass \n“If there is one quality which most permeates the music of Spirograph Studies\, it is\nmelodic beauty.”\n– Eric Myers\, The Weekend Australian\, July 3\, 2022 \n“There’s a lot of subtlety at work on this enjoyable set from the Melbourne-based\nquartet Spirograph Studies\, and the payoff to that approach are some pretty epic\nmoments. It’s just as engaging to trace the path of the small\, logical steps that lead\nup the huge melodic statements as it is to arrive at their destination. Those slow\nbuilds are the album’s winning quality\, and border on addictive.”\n– Dave Sumner\, Best Jazz on Bandcamp List\, October 2021 \n“This album absorbed me with its understated movement\, subtle colour shifts\,\nbeautiful melodic interaction\, and textural approach to music making.”\n– Rafael Karlen\, The Music Trust\, July 27\, 2020 \n“Spirograph Studies is a wonder – a muted sprawl of acoustic and electric\ninstrumentation\, a deep and evocative listen.”\n– Sydney Women’s International Jazz Festival\, 2019 \n“…original and fascinating music…”\n– Rob Kennedy\, Canberra City News\, August 17\, 2019 \n“…startling originality…”\n“…ruminative and minimalist…”\n– Eric Myers\, The Weekend Australian\, August 24\, 2019 \n“Spirograph Studies stands as one of Australia’s most innovative modern jazz\ngroups\, known for music that invites listeners into a world of nuance\, atmosphere\,\nand finely woven improvisation. “ – Sydney Con Jazz Fest\, 2026

SUMMARY:Barney McAll Non Compliance Trio
DESCRIPTION:For this special performance\, Barney McAll reunites with bassist Yunior Terry and drummer Ebs Daramola for an evening of fearless improvisation and spontaneous musical architecture. Together they create music that is playful\, profound and utterly unpredictable; where melody\, rhythm and imagination remain in constant motion.\n \n“Barney has always been a spiritual and positive voice\, a conceptualist with great empathy and humor. His activities are always intriguing and his powers on the keys formidable.” — Kurt Rosenwinkel\n \nBarney McAll – Piano Yunior Terry – Bass Ebs Daramola – Drums\n\nAbout Barney McAll: \nBarney McAll stands as one of Australia’s most visionary and uncompromising musical voices – a GRAMMY-nominated\, ARIA-winning pianist\, composer\, and producer whose work defies categorization. He has released 28 acclaimed solo albums\, performed on over 100 recordings\, and collaborated with Sia\, Daniel Merriweather and jazz legends including Gary Bartz\, Dewey Redman\, Maceo Parker\, Jimmy Cobb\, Billy Harper and Roy Ayers. Yet McAll’s significance extends far beyond his technical mastery; he is equally revered as a mentor and author\, challenging the commodification of creativity. \nBorn in Melbourne\, McAll’s musical DNA formed through early immersion in jazz and blues records at family gatherings. His professional journey began at the Victorian College of the Arts under Paul Grabowsky and Mike Nock\, before relocating to New York in the 1990s  a pivotal era that saw him co-found the seminal Groove Collective while developing his singular voice at storied venues like the Village Vanguard. \nMcAll’s catalogue spans spiritual jazz (Mother of Dreams and Secrets\, inspired by Cuban study)\, dystopian pop-jazz ( Global Intimacy under his TQX alias)\, and the ARIA-winning Mooroolbark (2015). His 2022 masterpiece Precious Energy – featuring Hiatus  members and Gary Bartz – was hailed as “world-class” (Rolling Stone) and “like drowning in honey” (Music Trust)\, exemplifying his ability to bridge avant-garde experimentation with visceral joy. \nAdventurous\, innovative\, super creative and just downright enthralling (and often breathtaking) listen from one of our finest musicians and a superb musical assemblage of talents. -Stuart Coupe

SUMMARY:CHRIS CODY QUARTET (Sydney/Melb)
DESCRIPTION:After launching his latest album\, Mountain To Sea\, for the MJC last year\, internationally renowned Sydney-based pianist and composer Chris Cody returns to Melbourne to perform with Julien Wilson (tenor and soprano saxophones)\, Lily Appelt (double bass)\, and Danny Fischer (drums).\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe music they play when they come together is organic\, intuitive\, exciting\, and without boundaries. The music was conceived as a lyrical response to turbulent times. Playing without a drummer adds exciting rhythmic roles to the individual and group playing\, with everybody enjoying the extra space. The group found some highly innovative ways to exploit the various possibilities of piano\, saxophone and bass. They combine Chris’s compositions with free group and solo improvisations to take the listener on a truly exciting and imaginative journey. \nChris Cody has headlined at numerous international festivals around the world including Paris Quartiers d’Été\, London\, Rome\, Brussels Jazz Marathon\, Antwerp\, Stockholm\, Munich\, Marciac\, Geneva\, Ascona\, Derry\, Dar Es Salaam\, and Algiers. He has worked with many outstanding international musicians including Roy Hargrove\, Carla Bruni\, Rick Margitza\, Rhoda Scott\, Michel Jonaz\, Annie Whitehead\, Sunny Murray\, Lisa Simone\, Herb Geller\, Tina Arena\, Marcel Azzola and Jason Marsalis. With fourteen CDs of his music released on international labels he has received glowing reviews\, featured on radio and television around the world and collaborated on numerous other international albums.\nVisit www.chriscody.com \nPresent by The Melbourne Jazz Co-operative: \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Melbourne Jazz Co-operative is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting and promoting original live jazz performance by established and emerging artists in Melbourne.
