SUMMARY:Bokani Dyer Trio: Traditions– Melbourne International Jazz Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:Bokani Dyer Trio is a high-voltage force in modern Afro-jazz\, led by visionary pianist and composer Bokani Dyer. Since his early career mentorship with celebrated pianist Jason Moran\, Dyer’s career has catapulted him across the globe — releasing six solo albums and performing on the world’s biggest jazz stages\, including North Sea Jazz\, London Jazz Festival and SFJAZZ in San Fransisco. \nBorn from Botswana’s soul and sharpened on South Africa’s jazz scene\, his trio — featuring Dyer on piano alongside Timothy Norton (bass) and Lumanyano Mzi (drums) — delivers a sound charged with swinging post-bop\, hypnotic groove and raw harmonic electricity. \nFor their Melbourne International Jazz Festival debut\, the trio presents music from their forthcoming album\, Traditions\, offering a rare opportunity to experience this new body of work live before its release. Much of the material remains fresh to the stage\, making each performance part of the music’s ongoing evolution\, reflecting\nBokani Dyer Trio’s continued exploration of heritage\, memory and identity.

SUMMARY:Soojin Suh Coloris Trio– Melbourne International Jazz Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:Known for her inventive approach to rhythm and improvisation\, Soojin Suh has developed a singular musical language that draws from both contemporary jazz and Korean artistic traditions. Alongside her acclaimed work as a bandleader\, Suh is a highly sought-after drummer and collaborator\, playing a central role in Sungjae Son’s Near East Quartet and their self-titled ECM release. \nWith pianist Jaehun Kang and bassist Hoo King\, Soojin Suh’s Coloris Trio draws on the concept of “melodic breath”\, a key principle in Korean traditional music. Their detailed arrangements and improvisations emerge from the pulse of the melody\, making way for striking moments and musical textures that come from a uniquely Korean aesthetic. \nPresented in partnership with Korea’s renowned Jarasum Jazz Festival\, these two special performances at The JazzLab showcase one of the most compelling ensembles in Korean jazz today. This project has received grant funding from the Australia-Korea Foundation of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

SUMMARY:Tomeka Reid Quartet Ft. Mary Halvorson (USA)– Melbourne International Jazz Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:Tomeka Reid stands as one of the most boldly imaginative voices in contemporary music — a fiercely creative cellist\, composer\, and bandleader whose work blends Western classical tradition\, modes rooted in the African diaspora\, and the avant‑garde. A defining force in Chicago’s improvised‑music community\, her boundary‑pushing artistry and sonic originality have earned major recognition\, including a 2022 Herb Alpert Award and a MacArthur Fellowship. \nFor this special residency at The JazzLab\, Reid reunites her celebrated quartet: Mary Halvorson — touted by NPR as “the most forward thinking guitarist working right now” — alongside her dynamic rhythm section of bassist Jason Roebke and drummer Tomas Fujiwara. Together\, the quartet takes the stage to perform their acclaimed 2026 release Dance! Skip! Hop! — a joyful\, rhythm‑bending\, harmonically rich album praised by The Guardian as “an early contender for jazz album of the year.” \nAudiences can expect four musicians at the top of their game\, sharing a near‑telepathic interplay shaped by years of collaboration\, in a display of fearless improvisation and a continual push into new musical territory. Renowned jazz critic Nate Chinen declared 2026 as “the year of Tomeka Reid” — the time to witness this extraordinary quartet is right now.

SUMMARY:Kadambawa
DESCRIPTION:Kadambawa is the original project and forthcoming debut album of Melbourne-based drummer and composer Jerush Perera\, bringing together contemporary jazz\, improvisation\, and the rhythmic traditions of Sri Lanka into a deeply personal and immersive musical experience. \nDrawing from his Sri Lankan heritage alongside Melbourne’s vibrant improvised music scene\, Perera’s compositions explore identity\, cultural fragmentation\, migration\, memory\, and community. The music moves fluidly between intricate rhythmic landscapes\, lyrical melodies\, open improvisation\, and moments of explosive collective energy\, creating a sound that is both deeply rooted in tradition and unmistakably contemporary. \nThe name Kadambawa\, meaning “a collection” in Sinhala\, reflects the project’s central idea: a gathering of cultures\, stories and musical voices. Each composition forms part of a larger narrative inspired by family history\, lived experience and the evolving relationship between heritage and modern life. \nA defining feature of the ensemble is its collaboration between contemporary jazz and South Asian musical traditions. Alongside piano\, guitar\, saxophone and double bass\, the music features Lucky Pereira on the Thammattama and Ashvin Bhanu on the Gata Bera\, both traditional Sri Lankan drums. And Malavika Harish performing on bansuri and Carnatic flute\, bringing the distinctive sounds and improvisational practices of South Asian music into dialogue with Melbourne’s contemporary jazz scene. \nKadambawa brings together musicians from Melbourne’s jazz\, improvised music and South Asian music communities. This special performance at Jazzlab presents music from Perera’s forthcoming debut album\, offering audiences an evening of adventurous original compositions\, fearless improvisation and cross-cultural collaboration ahead of the album’s release later this year. \nPersonnel \n\nJerush Perera – Drums & Composition\nMalavika Harish – Bansuri & Carnatic Flute\nMax Bruten – Guitar\nToby Barrett – Tenor Saxophone\nSaffi Campbell Walker – Piano\nJack Harris – Double Bass\nLucky Pereira – Thammattama & Percussion\n Ashvin Bhanu – Gata Bera

SUMMARY:TangoMundo CD Launch “Piazzolla Unleashed: Reclaiming the Edge”
DESCRIPTION:Raw\, urban\, and unapologetic\, Piazzolla Unleashed: Reclaiming the Edge dives headfirst into the street-smart soundworld of Astor Piazzolla; the outlaw genius who tore tango apart and rebuilt it with jazz fire\, rock attitude\, and Bach-level craft. This is Buenos Aires after dark: gritty\, volatile\, and electrically alive. \nTangoMundo brings to the stage Piazzolla repertoire rarely heard internationally\, drawing from across his restless\, rule-breaking career. From the midnight heartbeat of Buenos Aires Hora Cero to the smoky elegance of S’il Vous Plaît from his Paris years\, and the hard-edged cool of Reunión Cumbre from his legendary collaboration with Gerry Mulligan\, this program goes well beyond the greatest hits. TangoMundo also play intimate\, lesser-known gems such as Tanti Anni Prima and songs such as Jacinto Chiclana and Los Pájaros Perdidos\, revealing the intense poetry at the heart of Piazzolla’s music. \nThe program also unleashes works from Piazzolla’s later Electronic Octet and Nonet periods alongside iconic pieces like Libertango and Oblivion; music driven by a fierce appetite for experimentation and a visceral connection with the audience. Like music legends such as Ellington\, Prokofiev or Mozart before him\, Piazzolla was a composer-performer who lived in the moment\, constantly reinventing his sound and daring listeners to follow. \nThese original arrangements are crafted especially for TangoMundo by Argentine tango scholar and composer Guillermo Anad (Académico Correspondiente\, National Academy of Tango\, Buenos Aires)\, who also performs on viola. He is joined by cabaret powerhouse Faye Bendrups (piano and voice) and acclaimed Australian accordionist Anthony Schulz\, forming a trio that delivers Piazzolla’s music with grit\, elegance\, and ferocious heart. \nPiazzolla Unleashed is not nostalgia. It’s the music that changed Tango forever. \nDaniel Piazzolla\, Buenos Aires: “The great achievement of TangoMundo is to mix classical and\npopular nuances of my father’s music using an unexpected combination of only three instruments:\nviola\, accordion and piano. This is a novel and entirely Piazzollean approach”. \nIgnacio Frechero\, Argentine Consul\, Vancouver: “It was a privilege\, and a very moving moment for\nus\, to witness such a performance live. The three of you truly touched our hearts with your\ninterpretations. It is not common to be so far from our country and\, at the same time\, feel it so\nclose. You made that possible. Thank you again!”. \nTangoMundo\nGuillermo Anad: Music Director\, Arranger\, Viola\nFaye Bendrups: Piano\, voice\nAnthony Schulz: Accordion\, piano
