MJC Presents: SHAYAN

SHAYAN is a forward-thinking, ever-changing jazz ensemble that blends jazz with Iranian folk melodies, pop, classical and electronic music. The group were one of 15 recipients of the 2021 ABC Jazz Composer Commission and composed a suite original music for a chord-less quintet, exploring the intersection between contemporary Jazz and Traditional Iranian rhythm and melody.

Their latest album ‘The Heart is a Candle’, was recorded at ABC Studios as part of the commission in August 2022. It is dedicated to the brave women of Iran who have been risking imprisonment, beatings and even death, protesting their government for right to live with dignity and respect.
