Mosaic are a vibrant 10-piece contemporary Jazz ensemble rapidly emerging as an exciting force in the Sydney Jazz scene! Mosaic (2024 Fine Music Sydney Artists in Residence) focus on performing and premiering all new bespoke compositions written for the band by Australian composers under 25, culminating in a uniquely youthful and energetic sound. Mosaic have held a year-long residency at Foundry616, as well as played jazz festivals across NSW including the Conservatorium Jazz Festival, the Manly Jazz festival and are slated to appear at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival. Mosaic will be appearing at the JazzLab to launch their debut album WHERE WE ARE NOW – a collection of original large ensemble works that display a cross section of Sydney’s growing jazz and composition scene. WHERE WE ARE NOW  is available on Bandcamp: mosaicjazz.bandcamp.com

“[Mosaic is] a mighty project that our scene has desperately been missing for many years!” – Andrew Robertson (AR Big Band, Composer & Arranger)

“[Mosaic] gives me great hope for the future of creative original music in Australia, hearing younger musicians brave enough to present it with dedication and Enthusiasm!”  – James Ryan (Sonic Mayhem & The Subterraneans)

Mosaic will be collaborating and performing compositions by local Naarm composers including Christopher Rozakeas, and will be supported by the Abi Lee Trio.

Abi Lee is a pianist, composer, and improviser based in Naarm/Melbourne, Australia. Born to Korean parents, Abi grew up in Auckland, New Zealand. Since the age of 5, her love for piano and music has always been a driving force for her. She relocated to Melbourne, drawn by her love of Australian Jazz and studies at the Victorian College of the Arts with Stephen Magnusson, Andrea Keller and Barney McAll. Abi is always exploring the endless possibilities in improvisation and focusing on expanding her thinking in art.

Abi’s belief and love for music is shown in her debut album, Up on the Hill Again, Here I Go, released in May 2024. It highlights her and the band’s thoughtful approach to the music. Abi’s percussive and distinctive voice shows her strong influences from Keith Jarrett, Andrea Keller and Mike Nock. She can also be seen as a performer showcasing her original music and sharing the stage with Naarm’s notable musicians. Abi has been awarded several prizes and scholarships such as the Will Poskitt Piano Scholarship (2023), the Graham Coyle Prize (2022), the Ronald William Capron Prize (2022), and the Lady Turner Prize (2022).

“I’m struck by [Abi Lee’s] adventurous spirit, and fertile musical mind. There’s a wonderful sense of searching, courage, and a deep commitment and dedication to improvisation” –   Andrea Keller
