About Barney McAll:

Barney McAll stands as one of Australia’s most visionary and uncompromising musical voices – a GRAMMY-nominated, ARIA-winning pianist, composer, and producer whose work defies categorization. He has released 28 acclaimed solo albums, performed on over 100 recordings, and collaborated with Sia, Daniel Merriweather and jazz legends including Gary Bartz, Dewey Redman, Maceo Parker, Jimmy Cobb, Billy Harper and Roy Ayers. Yet McAll’s significance extends far beyond his technical mastery; he is equally revered as a mentor and author, challenging the commodification of creativity.

Born in Melbourne, McAll’s musical DNA formed through early immersion in jazz and blues records at family gatherings. His professional journey began at the Victorian College of the Arts under Paul Grabowsky and Mike Nock, before relocating to New York in the 1990s  a pivotal era that saw him co-found the seminal Groove Collective while developing his singular voice at storied venues like the Village Vanguard.

McAll’s catalogue spans spiritual jazz (Mother of Dreams and Secrets, inspired by Cuban study), dystopian pop-jazz ( Global Intimacy under his TQX alias), and the ARIA-winning Mooroolbark (2015). His 2022 masterpiece Precious Energy – featuring Hiatus  members and Gary Bartz – was hailed as “world-class” (Rolling Stone) and “like drowning in honey” (Music Trust), exemplifying his ability to bridge avant-garde experimentation with visceral joy.

Adventurous, innovative, super creative and just downright enthralling (and often breathtaking) listen from one of our finest musicians and a superb musical assemblage of talents. -Stuart Coupe
