After launching his latest album, Mountain To Sea, for the MJC last year, internationally renowned Sydney-based pianist and composer Chris Cody returns to Melbourne to perform with Julien Wilson (tenor and soprano saxophones), Lily Appelt (double bass), and Danny Fischer (drums).

The music they play when they come together is organic, intuitive, exciting, and without boundaries. The music was conceived as a lyrical response to turbulent times. Playing without a drummer adds exciting rhythmic roles to the individual and group playing, with everybody enjoying the extra space. The group found some highly innovative ways to exploit the various possibilities of piano, saxophone and bass. They combine Chris’s compositions with free group and solo improvisations to take the listener on a truly exciting and imaginative journey.

Chris Cody has headlined at numerous international festivals around the world including Paris Quartiers d’ÉtĂ©, London, Rome, Brussels Jazz Marathon, Antwerp, Stockholm, Munich, Marciac, Geneva, Ascona, Derry, Dar Es Salaam, and Algiers. He has worked with many outstanding international musicians including Roy Hargrove, Carla Bruni, Rick Margitza, Rhoda Scott, Michel Jonaz, Annie Whitehead, Sunny Murray, Lisa Simone, Herb Geller, Tina Arena, Marcel Azzola and Jason Marsalis. With fourteen CDs of his music released on international labels he has received glowing reviews, featured on radio and television around the world and collaborated on numerous other international albums.

Present by The Melbourne Jazz Co-operative:

The Melbourne Jazz Co-operative is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting and promoting original live jazz performance by established and emerging artists in Melbourne.

Since 1983 our objectives have been to increase the exposure of contemporary jazz performance by making it accessible to audiences, and to provide award waged performance opportunities for emerging and established artists.

In addition to support derived from member contributions, the MJC is assisted by  the Victorian Government, through Creative Victoria, via its Arts Development Programs. MJC was assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body from 1983-2017 inclusive, and was delighted to receive Australia Council funding of $60,000 for our 2019 program.

The MJC received $40,000 from the Australia Council over the 2021/2022 Financial Year, and was pleased to received a grant of $75,341 from Creative Australia (with Music Australia contribution) for our 2025 Annual Program.

Our sold-out 40th Anniversary Concert at the Melbourne Recital Centre in May 2023 was supported by a $20,000 grant from Creative Victoria’s Creative Projects program.
