Sydney-based guitarist and composer Hilary Geddes is an award-winning artist whose work sits at the intersection of contemporary jazz, improvisation, and song-driven expression. A recipient of the 2021 Freedman Jazz Fellowship and the 2019 Jann Rutherford Memorial Award, Geddes has quickly established herself as one of Australia’s most compelling creative voices.
In 2021, she released her AIR Award–nominated debut album Parkside (ABC Jazz) with the Hilary Geddes Quartet, showcasing a distinctive sound shaped by lyrical composition and dynamic ensemble interplay. Alongside collaborators Matt Harris (piano), Max Alduca (double bass), and Alex Inman-Hislop (drums), Geddes now presents music from her sophomore album Redleaf, further developing the quartet’s collective language through expansive forms, rich textures, and a deepened sense of ensemble trust.
The quartet has performed at major festivals and venues including the Melbourne International Jazz Festival and the Art Gallery of NSW’s inaugural VOLUME festival. In 2024, Geddes supported Marcus Miller (USA) at his sold-out City Recital Hall concert.
Beyond jazz and improvised music, Geddes is also a member and lead guitarist of the rock band The Buoys, reflecting the breadth and versatility of her musical practice.
